SPEECH

  • Articulation: Does your child have difficulty saying specific sounds? Are they unintelligible? Do you frequently have to relay what your child is trying to say to others? Does your child have meltdowns because no one can understand them? Articulation is how we produce speech sounds in the oral cavity using the lips, teeth, and tongue. An articulation error might be your child having a difficult time saying their “r” sound. We can help!

  • Fluency Disorders (Stuttering): an interruption in the flow of speaking characterized by atypical rate, rhythm, and disfluencies (i.e., repetition of sounds, syllables, words, phrases; sound prolongations, and blocks) which may be accompanied by excessive tension, speaking avoidance, and secondary mannerisms.

LANGUAGE

  • Receptive Language: Our ability to understand what is spoken to us. A child may experience difficulty following directions, difficulty understanding what is said to them, difficulty answering yes/no questions and "wh" questions.

  • Expressive Language: The ability to express oneself. A child may experience difficulty communicating their basic wants and needs, putting words together to form sentences, errors occurring with verb tenses, slower rate of vocabulary development, difficulty requesting, or difficulty asking questions.

  • Social Communication: Persistent difficulties with the use of verbal and nonverbal language for social purposes, difficulty understanding nonliteral language, difficulty changing communication to match the context or needs of the listener.

  • Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC): AAC supplements or compensates for impairments in speech-language production and/or comprehension, including spoken and written modes of communication. AAC uses a variety of techniques and tools to help the individual express thoughts, wants, needs, feelings and ideas, including the following: manual signs, gestures, picture communication boards, speech-generating devices. AAC can be helpful for those who are nonverbal, minimally verbal, and/or those who experience poor intelligibility.
